World Digestive Health day
The goal of World Digestive Health Day is to bring awareness about the normal functions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and how to keep it healthy.
Rather than just focusing on diseases and their causes the aim is to also promote a healthy gut for life.
Around 70% of our immune cells are in the gut. The health of our gut affects everything from our energy levels to digestive issues or even how often we may contract an infection or a cold.

Eating a varied diet and including a wide range of fruit and vegetables can lead to a diverse microbiome, an indicator of good gut health. This can help prevent diseases such as diverticulosis, a disease which is extremely common in older adults.
Gut health is something that everyone, at all ages, can improve by looking at their diet and eating appropriately.
Our team at UCU have chosen to highlight two herbs that are particularly useful for calming the gut as well as restorative gut health.
Peppermint, an aromatic perennial herb, can relieve digestive symptoms.

A review of nine studies in 726 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) where the participants were given peppermint oil for at least 2 weeks concluded that peppermint provided significantly better symptom relief than those given a placebo.
It is possible that peppermint tea could have similar effects.
Chamomile, a herb that comes from the Asteraceae plant family, has been consumed for centuries as a natural remedy for several health conditions including digestion.

Chamomile tea is also known for its calming effects and has traditionally been used for soothing gastrointestinal conditions such as nausea and gas.
